LaHurd’s expectations were correct. The enlisted men went on furlough, visiting family across the country or chumming around in the nearest city. Since the enlisted men made up the majority of the crew, the planes never left the ground for the first two weeks. Even if the entire crew had been present, the thick fogs and misty, overcast days would have forestalled any attempt at a practice mission. Daniel and the other officers spent their time in ground school, at the officers’ club and on occasions partook in some outdoor activities.

“I went hunting with Wickham yesterday. We stopped at Tech Supply and got ourselves a couple of automatic shotguns and some shells and out we went to the wild of the northwest. The pilot got two ducks—and all I got was wet and tired feet,” Daniel wrote home.

Nov. 24, 1943

Ephrata, Washington

Dear Folks.

I received the goodies O.K.—so thanks loads—Mel’s mother also sent me some ButtLawee and Mel sent me a box of candy so I’m well supplied for sometime. I also received the Tshirts—so I must thank you once again. Your all so swell—it really pays to have such swell folks.

They’ve kept us pretty busy going to ground school everyday this week. The weather is still bad around here for flying so we’ve been going to school instead. The Group is leaving here for Utah this coming week as the pilots have to get some flying time in as the Group is due for overseas duty by the 1st of the year. Boy!! what a Pi-- Poor Group this is. I really feel sory for the poor suckers that are stuck with this outfit. I just can’t express myself in telling you how lousy it is and how poor it’s run. Worst I’ve run into since being in the army.

GOOD NEWS

I guess you know I have a West Point Pilot—well! they made a mistake when they sent us from Pyote to here—there are four W.P. pilots and we’re—I mean pilots and crews are leaving this Friday for Rapid City S. Dak. and maybe we’ll only be there a short time and than leave for Florida—I heard a rumor today that the bombardiers from Hondo are up for 1st Lt. but they have to wait till their pilots get theirs first—Just a rumor.

I guess you misunderstood me about the Beacon. I receive one from Hondo and Pyote yet and those are the ones I want canceled. I’ll send you my new address as soon as I find it out. I’m really feeling swell now that I’m leaving this Group.
